Soul
The soul (or psyche in the Greek) is the combination of faculties that consist of the mind, will and emotions. The soul performs rational and intellectual functions. For example, the rational will never capture the wind of the spirit. This is why we are unable to discern God with our souls alone. Also, this is why it is impossible for God to dwell in our souls as our soul is open to attack and deception from Satan.
The soul is the mediator between the body and spirit, being constantly involved in a struggle to choose the prompting of the Holy Spirit, and the promptings of our carnal flesh, our un-renewed mind, and the world of Satan. The Holy Spirit must become manifest enough to win the battle for the soul. The responsibility of the soul then is to submit itself to the Holy Spirit. When it does, the soul will take us in the ways of the Lord. God beings our will to a point where it no longer has any desire, but to submit to the wishes of the Holy Spirit.
It’s in the realm of the soul that people experience most of their struggles, such as mental problems, damaged emotions and violated wills or abused wills. When our soul is wounded or damaged, it affects our whole life. Often we can remain trapped within our souls for years and years. The bible tells us (in 3 John 2) that God wants our life to prosper even as our soul prospers. It is our belief that ministry to the soul is essential for anybody wanting to live in victory.
